Rio Carnival (Sambadrome Parades) runs from 5 to 13 February 2027 at the Sambódromo Marquês de Sapucaí, also called the Sapucaí, in Rio de Janeiro. The programme includes Série Ouro, Grupo Especial and the Champions' Parade, drawing heavy airport use around parade nights. Getting to the Sambadrome from Rio airports
GIG is Rio's main international gateway and is about 16 km by road from the Sambadrome; taxi or ride-hail can take about 15–20 minutes off-peak and longer on parade nights. SDU is closest, about 5 km away and normally 10–15 minutes by taxi, but it is essentially domestic. From SDU, VLT light rail reaches Central, followed by roughly a 700 m walk. From GIG, use taxi, ride-hail, BRT to metro, or city bus.
Flying home after the Carnival parades
Airports are busiest after the main Carnival dates, especially Ash Wednesday, 10 February 2027, with a smaller second wave after the Champions' Parade on the weekend of 13–14 February. Expect crowded terminals at GIG and SDU, longer road journeys near the Sambadrome and more demand for taxis and ride-hailing. Arrive earlier than usual and check the live departures board before leaving for the airport so you can adjust your transfer time.
Sapucaí travel tips for parade nights
Match your Sambadrome sector to the correct rail stop: Praça Onze serves even-numbered sectors, while Central do Brasil serves odd-numbered sectors and the assembly area. On parade days, special traffic closures affect roads around Presidente Vargas and taxi points are kept around the perimeter. Allow much more time than a map estimate and avoid driving when possible.
